BOSTON - Ryan Collins continues to make jaws drop and continues to record times that no one ever thought attainable at the high school
level.
That is, anyone other than the Mansfield High senior distance runner.
Collins ran out of his shoes, lapping the field to clock a meet-record time of 9:18.53 in the two mile run at the Reggie Lewis Center to have
the crowd assembled for the Hockomock League Championship Track and Field Meet on its feet in awe and in admiration.
"I just got out good, kept my head down and went for it," said Collins, who clocked a 4:35 split at the mile mark and eventually recorded a
48-second margin of victory over King Philip High's own stellar distance runner Paul Matz.
Collins' pace along the banked Boston surface shattered a record that dated back to 1981, the previous mark of 9:29 set by former
Foxboro High runner Zach Tisdale.
Couple the Collins run with championship performances from John Lutkevich (600, a school record), Matt Callanan (55 hurdles), Dan Glavin
(shot put) and a title from the 4x400 relay team, the Mansfield High Hornets claimed their seventh straight Hockomock League
Championship Meet crown, earning 87 points to enjoy a 43-point margin of victory over second place North Attleboro.
**The runnerup Rocketeers of NORTH ATTLEBORO had seven individual placements produce points. Sophomore Nick Wade won the 1000
with a personal best time of 2:38.16 by a lean and teammate Rob Sheehan took third, two seconds behind. Nick Deininger clocked a snappy
8.04 second time for second place in the 55 hurdles. Junior Ken Woodward won the non-scoring long jump with senior Steve Demers
taking third, both with personal-best distances.
**Senior Jamie Holmes had a career meet for FOXBORO, while Tim Keefe came through with eight points for his blistering second place
finish in the 1,000 at 2:39 and anchored the second place 4x400 relay team. Holmes logged a personal-best clearance of 6-2 for second
place in the high jump and then took third place, good for six points, in the 55 dash with a personal best time of 6.82.
**Senior Paul Matz (two mile) and sophomore Brent Chapski (55 dash) carried the flag for KING PHILIP, each securing eight points for
second-place performances. Matz ran second only to Collins with a clocking of 10:06 in the two mile run, while Chapski, who ran a
personal-best 6.75 time at the State Coaches Meet a week ago, ran a 6.81, finishing only behind Stoughton's Ben Wong. In addition,
sophomore Dave Connolly clipped 12 seconds off of his previous personal best time to take third in the mile run at 4:36, while
record-holding (6-4) high jumper Brian Toney had to settle for fourth place at 6-1.
No one was able to keep pace with Collins. "It's been so cold, they're happy to be indoors with no elements, no wind," said Julie Collins,
Ryan's mother and the Mansfield High coach. "They were ready to run fast."
Especially Collins.
"It's been freezing out, doing our workouts," said the younger Collins. "It was ridiculous running outside last week, you can hardly move,
your body hardly gets warm. To run in controlled conditions, it's a lot easier. Having a banked trap helps too, as opposed to a 200 meter flat
track."
Collins had some competition, at least for a mile.
"I had the record in my mind, that was my goal," he said, who then began picking runners off one by one. "I was pushing myself, then I
started lapping kids. I tried to pick kids off one by one. I thought that I could be close to the record."
The Hornets also had a fifth-place finish in that event when Kevin Meagher clocked a personal-best by eight seconds. Then it was more
great performances all over the surface.
Lutkevich broke his own record in the 600 at 1:23.98, winning by an eye-popping three seconds, "that's unbelievable," said coach Collins.
Callanan and Peter Conti (who hit the third hurdle, collected 16 points for the Hornets with a 1-3 finish in the 55 hurdles. Glavin (52-9), a
sophomore and McPherson (50-4), a junior added 16 more points with the shot put.
Mike Bolea shattered his previous best clocking by 15 seconds in the mile run, taking second place at 4:33, Joe Choiniere claimed second
place in the 300 at 51.7 and then ran the first leg for the title-taking mile relay team, while sophomore Chris Harney blasted out a personal
best time of 1:21.8 for fourth place in the 600.
The Hornets are defending MIAA Division 2 Meet champions heading back to the RCL Saturday.
"This (the Hockomock League meet) is for bragging rights," said Collins. "We were pretty miserable this past week, the cold and all in
training. But, it's that mental toughness which gets us through."
