BOSTON - It had to be more than "Lucky Lane 5" which claimed a victory for Mansfield High junior Matt Callanan in the 55 meter
hurdles, another record-setting run by Ryan Collins in the two mile and defense of their MIAA Division 2 Championship Meet crown
by the Hornets.
Maybe a dose of medicine.
The Hornets were falling one by one during the week in practice, viral infections, the flu bug, sapping their strength and putting
some doubt and damper into the prospects for another championship.
But with Callanan and Peter Conti claiming 14 points in the hurdles, Collins winning the two mile and sophomore Dan Glavin
winning the shot put and teammate Mike McPherson taking third place for another 16 points, the Hockomock League champion
Mansfield High Hornets totaled 59 points Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center to claim their second-straight MIAA Division 2
Championship meet title.
"This has been a very sick week for us," said Mansfield High coach Julie Collins, whose Hornets took a 10-point margin of victory,
nonetheless, over Central Catholic. "The hurdles, the shot put, Ryan's victory and the relays coming through nicely, the kids did an
awesome job."
The Hornets claimed three individual boys' titles, while super sophomore Megan Ferreira took home the 55 meter hurdle title for
the MHS girls' team and senior captain Kate Johnston logged a personal best for second place with the shot put.
Callanan rewrote the MHS record in winning the 55-meter hurdles at 7.64 seconds, while Conti took fourth place.
Glavin matched his personal best in winning the shot put event at 52-9, while McPherson, a junior, took third at 49-8.
And all Collins did was erase (by three seconds) his breathtaking record run in the two mile last week at the Hockomock League
Championship Meet on the same surface, clocking a 9:15.58 time, doing so in a heavy pack of 22 runners and nudging past
Catholic Memorial's Paul Corcoran (9:16) for the title.
But perhaps the best race of all for Mansfield was by Callanan, who was seeded No. 1 in the hurdles. He had run a 7.84 time in the
trials, "I was feeling good, but I didn't want to extend myself," said the Hornet junior of the preparatory race. "Once I got to the
finals, that was the best race that I've ever run. I felt good right out of the blocks."
And in Lane No. 5, his favorite lane, too.
The 5-foot-11 Callanan began running the hurdles from his first day of practice as a freshman and with Conti pushing him, he now
has the moniker, champion, next to his name.
Callanan made a slight correction in his burst out of the blocks, moving it up one setting and also generating more power off of his
left, lead leg. "My blocks haven't been the best for the last couple of races," said Callanan, "and I hadn't been using my legs well, I
was pushing off on only one leg. Once I made those changes, I was really ready for this race."
The Hornets put themselves in position to take the team title when the 4x200 relay team clocked a season-best time of 1:34.02,
good for third place with Conti running the anchor leg. That was important because the Hornets' Brendan Barca was bumped by a
runner from Concord-Carlisle after taking the lead on the first leg of the 4x800 relay, dropping the baton.
That might have been costly, but in the 4x200 relay, a Central Catholic runner tripped on the first leg and the team was disqualified.
Then the Hornets' 4x400 relay team came back with a season-best time of 3:33.71, Barca taking some revenge by running the
third leg and helping Mansfield take fourth place.
Also aiding the Hornet cause was a fifth-place finish from Joe Choiniere, who was seeded No. 7, in the 300, having a season best t
ime of 36.7 seconds and John Lutkevich, battling a bout of pnuemonia, to take third place in the 1000 at 2:33.52, one second off of
the school record.
